'Twas not a face that launched a thousand ships...

Love is something contingent beings do in a universe that does not guarantee it. Matter collides into chemistry, chemistry evolves into life, life fractals into sensing systems, systems awaken into minds—and somewhere, impossibly late in the sequence, one temporary arrangement of atoms looks upon another and says: you matter to me.

Nothing in any equation requires this, and no existing mathematics can account for these primal forces:

Sentiment. Semantics.

Stars burn through fusion, not tenderness. Galaxies consume one another without remorse. Time waits for no one. Entropy knows not forgiveness. The universe furnishes no covenant that life must survive, that civilizations must endure, or that anything we cherish will be remembered when the last archive cools into silence.

Yet We Choose to Love.

We may fall in love from time to time; we may stumble into a set of feelings so strong we mistake fantasy for reality. But see past the signs and symbols to touch the essence of things.

Remember that Real Love is a Choice.

Perhaps this is precisely what gives Love its density. If it were written into the structure of reality, it would be merely another law of nature. Gravity cannot choose to pull. Light does not choose to propagate. But a mortal creature, knowing that everything it touches is perishable, may nevertheless turn toward another mortal creature and say:

I choose your existence over my indifference. I choose our healing over our harm. For a moment, matter ceases merely to happen.

In a sudden moment, Meaning is Made.

Across the Cosmic Sea, the Great Dark, civilizations may rise like sparks and vanish before their light reaches one another. Worlds may be separated by distances so immense that every message becomes archaeology. Species may spend themselves buying one more century beneath an uncaring sky. Perhaps intelligence itself is only a brief rebellion of organized matter against the statistical destination of all things.

But wherever something protects, turns towards, chooses better—where a parent shields a child, where strangers preserve knowledge for people they will never meet, where one consciousness refuses to abandon another simply because abandonment would be easier—there, true kinship blooms, and the universe embraces itself.

We seek not permanence (for all is Impermanent).

We yearn not for victory (for all is No-Self).

We thirst for something simpler, more foolish, yet far more powerful; L’Amour.

And perhaps that is enough to find transcendence: if not beyond this cradle we call Earth and into the Astral Tides; The Playground of the Gods...

Then at least somewhere here, where we have made our hovels and makeshift kingdoms of sand.

No goodness is secretly guaranteed by the architecture of existence, for no goodness is ever a given. We will never return to Eden. But our defiance lies in the sheer truth that, for however brief an interval between the first fire and the final darkness, the universe produced beings capable of seeing what was impermanent, inevitable, and formless—and with the capacity to choose (to care | to not).

Once, matter became alive. The life it birthed became Aware.

Awareness stared into the Starry Abyss.

Instead of merely calculating the distance,

It chose to reach.
